So here we go!!
Is something wrong if I need lube?
Hell No!! Nothing is wrong. Yes, we know that is the automatic thought when you realize that it is a necessity and interrupts you in the middle of your fun. But that is not the case, dear! You could need lube for a number of reasons. You could need to drink more water, the foreplay session might be cut short as you are focused on the main event, or your hormones could be affecting how much natural lubricate you are producing. If you just want to make sure there is no pain or discomfort when you got down and dirty, then a good lubricant is your best friend. This is where it transitions into better, healthier sex.
How lube makes for healthy sex
One word everyone, ORGASMS!!! That’s rights, ladies and gents. A good lube can help everyone hit the ultimate climax. ‘How?’ you ask. Simple: better lubrication means easier and more pleasurable friction for everyone!!! This leads to the desired achievement of those mind-blowing, full-bodied orgasms. Plus, being well lubricated helps prevent small tears and irritation that occur with too much friction and not enough moisture.
Having lube for anal play is very beneficial as well. Using a lube, and not a desensitizing cream, can help prevent serious injuries during anal play. By using those desensitizers, you may not notice any tears or serious problems early enough to stop before permanent damage is done. Silicone lubricant is a great choice as it stays for a long time without drying out. If you don’t want to just use silicone lube or want to protect your silicone based toys, the best alternative is to use a lube like ease from intimate earths collections it has an all natural plant based formula which slightly gives the feeling of a tingle that ultimately helps “ease” the action.
The best rule to any type of lube play, especially anal, is the more lube the better. For anal, even if you think you have enough, add a smidge more and communicate any discomfort to your partner.
Your options!
So now we move onto the basics because the right lube can make any type of session into a wonderful experience for everyone. From water-based to silicone, flavored or not, we have all the answers that you would need to help you make the right selection for your next play session.
Water-based
The best option for all women and for toy play! The reason is because water is all natural and very slick, with a few added ingredients that will make it last longer, it makes for a longer lasting better lubricant for everyone. Water based is also the least sticky feeling of the lubes and does not stain cloth unless it has been flavored. Some people do have a qualm with some water-based lubes don’t lasting as long or that they need to keep reapplying. That is why we like lubes such as Frixion or Knob Polish where adding a small amount of saliva or water will re-constitute the lubricant so no need to find the ever illusive bottle in the middle of fun.
Silicon-based
The best option for anal play or for water play! That’s right, lovers. This is the lube for shower, hot tub, and anal exploration! Silicone-based lube has a silky consistency much like an oil, only it is slightly easier of a clean up. This is great for any couple looking for extreme and/or long lasting play with minimal reapplications. This is also the recommend for people who are hyper sensitive to things, and cannot use many of the other lubes we have already discussed. Silicone leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth after application. One great option is Uberlube, one that the “Shameless Sex” podcast gushes over regularly. They even say that they carry it in their purses just in case the need rises for a good lube. The only real downside to this option is that it is a BIG no-no for any silicone toys, so it is ruled out for mens’ strokers and about 60% of womens’ toys. This is because it breaks it down at a molecular level, either leaving little pockets for bacteria to form or melting the toy into a unusable puddle.
Oil-based
The best option for massages that change to intercourse. Oil based is for those of you that need that extra extra slick silky feel. There are also a few flaws to this lube like not being compatible with any latex contraceptives or with silicone toys. With condoms, it ends up causing the latex to become porous and can even rip or tear them so better for couples who do not need to use those or for just personal masturbation (for men more then women). Then, on toys, it does the same thing and much like silicone on silicone toys, it will tear apart your toy after a few uses and its the even harder to to get off of the toys. While it is a nice consistency, its the hardest lube to get off yourself, toys, or your bedding and its very possible to stain everything it touches. If you do love an oil based lube, there is one lube we do swear by in the store called Merh. It is a silky smooth lube manufactured right here in Utah!! And is great for helping to heal new tattoos, as well.
Hybrid
The best option for all around play. This is the best of both worlds you get the benefits of both the water and whatever its mixed with be it oil or silicone. These still aren’t silicone toy friendly but still just as good for extremely slick fun of any other sort. A good one we recommend is the System jo Hybrids in both silicone and coconut oil.
Flavors, yay or nay?
We say absolutely yes!!! This comes from the fact all of us in the store have been able to try a vast array of flavored lubes and we now have some favorites we would like to share. First though we do need to discuss the common misconception: “AHHH! NO! NO! SUGAR ON MY LADY BITS!!! WHAT DO YOU WANT, AN INFECTION???”. Trust us, we hear this all the time, and yes, in past, all flavored lubricants were made from sugar and other things that when put into a vagina would cause the worst yeast infections of our lives!!! But now, lubricant companies have listened to our needs and given us some sugar-free beauties. The amazing System jo H20 and Intimate Earths brands came into existence and changed everything for the better.
System jo H20 Flavors- With an assortment of 28 flavors currently available, and they are always in the process of giving us new amazing ones, this company does flavoring right! The System jo H20 flavors are paraben and sugar-free, so anyone can use them. They are made with natural extracts, so when you are tasting Hazelnut Espresso, you are also getting the fun tingle down there from real espresso beans. Jo loves their products so much and swears by it enough that it sends every store a fun menu of how to flavor beverages with their lubes!! Yes, we have tried them and we can say it is BOMB!!
Intimate Earths Lubricants- Everything this company makes from clitoral simulator creams to massage oils is completely natural. Yes, this means you could probably give all the product they make a taste, but we recommend the oral glides specifically for that. They have those flavors down pat. Our best recommendation from those flavors is the Cheeky Apple Oral Glide, it is like biting into a fresh juicy apple you just plucked out of an orchard!
Lubricants and Getting Pregnant, or trying.
For this one, it is as simple as checking your lube to make sure there is no spermicide in the ingredients. Most lubricants do not have spermicide, but it’s always helpful to check. If you feel like having a special lube to help, there are some made to help, like Astroglide TTC, or Sliquid Organics. Remember when trying to get pregnant, the best thing is to make sure you use a lube that helps promote ph balance and is as all-natural as possible. Other lubes that would help for keeping the womb baby ready would be Pink Naturals or System Jo Agape, both of which are made to mimic the body’s natural healthy lubrication. System Jo Agape even promotes your own natural lubrication, so its always good to keep on hand.
What can cause low natural lubricant?
So many things can cause vaginal dryness;
- Lack of sexual arousal- This can be from just lack of foreplay or because your body is just having a hard time getting to the point of “yeah, lets do this”.
- Use of chemicals and products like harsh soaps, swimming pool chemicals, or even medications you are taking like over the counter cold remedies.
- After tampon usage- Yes, most women dislike having sex on a period but even a couple days after it ends, your tampon may cause dryness.
- Surgeries- Hysterectomies and c-sections can cause sever dryness from those sensitive membranes being introduced to amounts of oxygen they are not used to. This can decrease the natural secretion of lubrication.
- Chemotherapy- This one just wrecks the body all around, and because your body is fighting so much, it can decide to just not give out the fluids that you need for happy sex.
- Menopause- Hot flashes, random mood changes, cold sweats and even reduced lubrication when its needed, which means more pain during sex . Menopause can even cause vaginal dryness years before you go through the main event.
- Dehydration- This literally means that it just has no water in your body. So, when you need more water, so does your vagina. So do your lady bits a solid and always drink plenty of water.
- Hormones- They can mess with everything from your hair and nails, to your mood, and even your skin tone. So its safe to say it’ll get you when you least expect it too. Hormones being out of wack can make it so the natural lubes don’t secrete as often as they should, leading to dryness during intercourse.
Any of these problems can have easy fixes with, yep you guessed it, a good lubricant you can find at stores like ours!!
Lubes and porn!
Now, we know this sounds like a funny subject to include into our lube talks, but this is very important. Now a days, for the younger generations just hitting age of adulthood, porn is a way they think to learn about all sorts of things. This is where it becomes scarily sad. Most people see porn and go “Oh, those people get straight pounded and never need any kind of lubricants”. If you seriously think this out, you can see how it would be very untrue. It wouldn’t make for a good movie if they had the couples stop to grab the lube and apply and continue the scene, so they cut these out. Porn leads to some people feeling ashamed because they can’t do or keep up with what porn stars do in a video. When they edit down the videos, it doesn’t show you how often lube is applied or all the tricks they use lube for. When they look stupidly sweaty its usually baby oil so that everything is super slick. The ladies that can squirt, it is a 50/50 chance they have actually stopped the scene and used a lube squirter to insert lubricants, then have the guy or toy get back in place, stroke a few times and pull out giving the illusion that she is squirting. Mind blowing right? So please, lovers, don’t try to compare yourselves to movie magic.
Your toys are thirsty people!
Silicone toys, they are lifelike super soft textures! Most gel vibes and dongs are made out of this and all mens strokers are made out of this. These toys don’t slide on skin as easy because its like real skin on skin. This means that your toys are thirsty. They aren’t like our skin that can make its own moisture and if you just using anything to lube it up you can really hurt your toy. Things that could destroy your toy (and could cause medical complications) are butter, margarine, hand cream, vegetable oil, baby oil, or Vaseline. The easiest way to remember what not to use is remembering this phrase “silicone will eat itself”. So putting silicone toys touching in one box will ruin the toy, using silicon-based lube will also eat your silicone toy. So with silicone toys, it’s best to use water-based lube. If you prefer glass and metal toys, then silicone-based lube is perfectly fine for you.
So lovers, with all this new info, go forth and lube wisely.
